Electric Vehicle

We've seen the future and it's ELECTRIC!

BREC is excited to bring electric vehicle (EV) education and products to our members. There have been advancements in technology enabling electric vehicles to become more efficient and more affordable. With these changes, we can be on the road to a cleaner world.

The battery technology in an electric vehicle is similar to the battery in your smartphone, but on a much larger scale. EVs convert electricity from the grid into stored energy and use it to power the electric engine, as well as the rest of the car’s systems, including lights, wipers, air conditioning and entertainment.

How they Charge –

Level 1 charger – Most electric vehicles come equipped with a level 1 charger. These chargers plug into standard 120-volt outlets. If empty, it takes about 15 hours to fully charge.

Level 2 charger – A level 2 charger plugs into a 240-volt outlet (same as a washer and dryer) and cuts charging time in half. While these chargers do not typically come with cars, most EVs are level 2 charger compatible. A level 2 charger will completely charge an EV in 3 to 8 hours.

Level 3 or DC fast chargers – Currently, DC fast chargers are the fastest chargers on the market. This type of charging station is not well-suited for home installation due to the voltage required and its high cost. In addition, not all EVs are DC fast charger compatible. A compatible vehicle can completely recharge an empty battery at a DC fast charger in the community, in 15 minutes to an hour.

Making a vehicle purchase, no matter the kind is a tough decision to make. Review these common questions to help you think through important items to consider if you’re planning to go electric. We think you’ll find that an EV can be a great fit for almost any lifestyle.

How far can you drive daily?

About 90 percent of consumers drive 80 miles or less per day. Electric vehicles have a range of 100 to 300+ miles on a single charge, making an EV capable of handling the daily demands of most commuters.

How many passengers can fit in an EV?

Most electric vehicles on the market are compact cars or sedans with 5-capacity seating. However, there are a few models on the market that can seat seven, with more models being developed.

What is the carrying capacity in an EV?

Usually, electric vehicles have standard size trunks, perfect for your everyday needs. Some EVs even have rear seats that lay down to create extra room for storage.

Will I be close to a charging station?

Many workplaces, like BREC, offer charging stations to charge and infrastructure in the community is expanding daily. You can even charge your EV at home overnight by installing a charging station. Inquire about an in-home charging station here. Visit this site to see other charging stations near you.

Aren’t electric vehicles expensive?

Contrary to popular belief electric vehicles can be affordable. While there are luxury models on the market, after federal tax credits and other incentives available, EVs start in the low $20,000 range, competing with many other cars on the market.
