Area players selected for Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl
88 of South Carolina’s top high school football players met in Myrtle Beach for the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl on Dec. 11. Local players sponsored by Blue Ridge Electric include Aalijah Kelly and Josh Sapp of Greenville High, Charles Couch of T.L. Hanna High, Jahiem Lawson and Trent Pearman of Daniel High and KT Perry from Westside High.
With the Touchstone Energy Bowl serving as the only fully sanctioned all-star game for the state’s high school seniors, it left the two respective staffs with high-caliber talent from every pocket of the state. There were two criteria for selection—that every region in each classification had to be represented and that a maximum of two players from each high school team could be selected. The game was filled with players who’ve verbally committed to colleges around the country, including several to SEC and ACC programs.
Part of the week’s experience was a Christmas shopping spree for 44 deserving kids from Horry County Schools. In addition to the shopping spree and the game, players rode in the Touchstone Energy Cooperative balloon and participated in Lineman Demo Day, in which they explored careers as lineworkers through six hands-on demonstrations presented by Horry Electric Cooperative linemen.
The South won the game 20-17. Lawson, a Daniel High defensive lineman, recorded three sacks in the game to earn his team’s Defensive Player of the Game honors.
